Chapter Eighteen

Kyla

“If you’re so worried, just call Quinn and ask him to come and babysit me,” I say with a smirk. “I’m sure he’d come running.”

Patrick shoots a fiery glare at me.

Point, Kyla.

The truth is, my eyes are bleary from staring at my laptop screen for the past few hours.

Patrick and I have basically been sitting in the most awkward and uncomfortable silence since we got back to his place, and the last thing I want to do is get all dolled up to go out.

Talk about having a pole shoved up your ass.

He’s pretty much ignored me since we left Molly’s, which, to be honest, really fucking stings. Sure, I flirted with his brother but it didn’t warrant this cold shoulder bullshit.

I sit back against the couch, stretching my arms overhead so that the hem of my t-shirt skims the bottom of my boobs. “What’s the matter? Don’t you trust your little protégé to watch out for me?”

Patrick’s nostrils flare and he shoves his chair backward before stalking over to me. “I want you with me,” he growls.

“So territorial,” I snap. “Are you gonna pee on me next?”

He sweeps a hand through his hair. “Look, I’m not leaving you here alone. I don’t care how many locks and alarms I have on this place. You’re coming, like it or not.”

“And what exactly am I supposed to do when you’re in your meeting?” I say. “If you insist on bringing me to your seedy little club?”

His face flushes a darker red than I thought possible since he’s already so crispy, and his eyes spit ice blue flames. “I have a safe room.”

“Mm-hm. So you won’t let me stay with Quinn here at your place. Instead, you’re dragging me there to hang out in some safe room by myself?” I shake my head. “Pass!”

“It’s for your protection.”

“Great,” I say with a roll of my eyes. “Look, I obviously want to be safe, but is this really necessary? Isn’t it worse for me to be out and about than tucked away somewhere in a gilded cage?” I look around. “Actually, this isn’t really a gilded cage. It’s more like a man cave, and a pretty disorganized one at that. How you find anything in here is beyond me.”

“I have a system.”

“It looks like your system is a little buggy,” I snap.

“Look, it would be worse for you to be away from me,” he grunts, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. “Now get ready. We’re leaving in ten minutes.”

“Ten minutes?” I shriek. “Have you seen me?”

His lips press together in a tight line. “You’re the only thing I ever do see,” he mutters as he shuts his own laptop and shoves the chair back into his desk. He storms into his bedroom without another look at me.

A tiny part of me can’t actually believe we had sex only a few hours ago.

I mean, he’s acting like he despises me right now, like he can’t even bear to talk to me.

He’s angry at something, that’s for damn sure.
